Community isn't just the name of a quirky NBC sitcom starring titties, it's also the buzzwords around the internets for the throngs of fans that identify with and center their life around certain games. It's also our topic this week as we look at game communities in detail. What makes a good community? A bad one? Are their communities that welcome noobs, or are all communities inherently insular? Check it out, you little dog!

Damn Elmdor, Esteban called you a straight up scrub in Dota. How could you let him do you like that?

Android tablets do have one significant advantage, cost. I've seen "ok" ones as cheap as $60, average cost is around $100 for decent ones. That's crazy. The cheap ones get better and better. I can't really imagine what I would need one for though.

Should I watch like, tutorial vids if I want to prep for DOTA 2 release?

The new avatar series is much more "grown up" than the old one. You could conceivably skip the old one, and go back to it if you want more.

Google's new tablet is mighty tempting. Love that price and I want to expand my ecosystems. Volt, do you want an invite? Yes, watch tutorials. They really help. I really like the old one so far. Aang is funny and it's smartly written. I hear the live action movie is fucking horrible.

I've been following Slickdeals to see how low those android tablets can go, this is the most recent one. slickdeals.net/f/4807190-Dual-Core-1-5GHz-1G-8G-Android-4-0-7-inch-Capacitive-Screen-Tablet-PC-with-WiFi-HDMI-Camera-112-99-free-shipping?

You got invites? I'll take one if you're not going to do anything with it, otherwise I can just catch up on tutorials until it releases.

I thought it was fine, but yeah people straight up hate the live action movie.

Well you guys, I just don't see the appeal of DOTA 2 or any of those types of games. I watched a little tutorial on youtube for new players and it just does not look fun. I don't get it.

Oh, you guys! Have you really forgotten that you could only have 7 items on the AH at the same time? :)

Another reason people did bazaars was because there was a tax on the AH, and you could get around the tax by selling your bazaar. This was especially important for REALLY pricing things because the AH would tax you on the total cost you put the item up on the AH for, and took the money if it sold or not. Not the case with bazaars.

I always thought the bazaar system was fucked because you had to browse every asshole standing outside of Jeuno to look at items--there was no search tool to find a person with the thing you wanted to buy from their bazaar.

I think you are right, though--FFXI was against player/community advancement, but that was their business model. It's how they kept people paying to play. And it worked (and is STILL working).

And I absolutely can't believe you actually played this on PS2. Hardcore. :D

Just a quick one, how come there is no album art work on the iTunes feed? you're making my podcast collection look messy!

Haha

Esteban, if you still have a Sine Mora code to give away, I'd be interested. I don't have any particularly convincing rationale as to why I should get it though, aside from a love for old school shooters. Below is an embarrassing attempt to prove my "street cred" by listing some titles in my not-so-impressive collection.

1. Layer Section II (JP Sega Saturn)
2. Strikers 1945 (JP Sega Saturn)
3. Thunder Force V (JP Sega Saturn)
4. Gunbird 2 (Dreamcast)
5. Mars Matrix (Dreamcast)
6. Bangai-O (Dreamcast)
7. R-Type Final (PS2)
8. Ikaruga (Gamecube)
9. Geometry Wars 1 & 2 (XBLA)
10. Radiant Silvergun (XBLA)

I'm always down for a good shooter, especially now that we have online leaderboards.

Esteban barks like the little chihuahua he is! Yo quiero your ass on bot! Solo mid or I feed!

We used to have album art! This whole operation has gone to shit, I swear. Anyone know how to add the album art in Audacity? I think Este is still using Audacity for the editing. In GarageBand there was just a box you'd drag and drop the art to.

Thanks for the memories, Angelkin. I forgot why everyone bazaared outside of Jeuno in the zone where Crawler's Nest was, but I remember it happening.

Deathmetalgreg, I agree watching Dota won't look like much without having played it some. I like to watch some shoutcasted games, though. And I think those are some nice shmup bona fides.

Volt, watch Dota Cinema or look for Purge (a caster) on Youtube, he's got a bunch of "here's how you play this guy" type of vids.

I think maybe something is up with my computer. I will check into the album art thing. Do they ALL not have art or just recently? DMG- the code is all yours. You are worth by virtue of being the only person that wants the game, lol. It's actually pretty good because GhM had very little to do with it. I can tutor anyone in how to lose at Dota for 3 ref/hour. Angelkin, thanks for clearing that up. I remember running through that forest up near Sandoria trying to find spawn points for lumber before Chinese botters did. Oh, the good times. I heard they just got rid of the Jeuno tax but now have it on Aht Urghan, etc.

started playing Demon's Souls... I feel like such a noob for having to look at a FAQ. Am I going to totally screw myself over late game because I spec'd my character wrong?

Hi Esteban, I was wondering if you have any protips on tf2 trading or item crafting to do with pyromania? I am assuming that all the limited stuff will shoot up in price soon? Keep up the excellent work guys!

Fooyee- Dude, I too consult the faqs on that game. I can't imagine trying to beat it without the internet. I think you'll be ok. Just don't pump it all into luck or something.

Skottelgoed- I would hold off on opening burnt crates until you see how the items are valued. Right now, not much is going for more than a few ref, unless the item is super rare. And scorched keys can only come from MannCo Store, so you're gambling 2.50 everytime. You could wind up with total shit! Plus a lot of the items only show in Pyroland and people are gonna get sick of Pyroland eventually. I wish someone would buy my fucking Steel Toe unusual already. So, in short, I don't know shit :-)

I did basically 2 playthroughs of Demon Souls. On the first I did kind of screw up my build. Basically my only ranged option was a bow and I found I usually couldn't hit anything with it. So, I feel that having a character with an ranged auto-aiming magical attack is very helpful. It makes the game so much easier. I checked a faq later for some secrets but, somehow, restarting the game to "fix" my build didn't bother me at all. Maybe because the game is just so much fun :-).

The sad thing is that Esteban says Demon's Souls makes you feel like a champion when you beat the bosses. I've found the exact opposite, I feel like less of a man. :P

I had to watch some walkthroughs, grind a bunch, read some faq's and it still took me a long ass time to beat the Tower Knight. The game is still fun, but it does seem like reading FAQ's is a requirement.

After beating the Tower Knight for instance, I went to what I thought was the next world, and it seems to be a dead end. Then some other player appeared in my world and broke all my shit. Now I have no equipment, no souls, the cost of repair is ridiculous (The cost is more than the cost to buy a new set, wtf?), and I don't know where to go. I'll probably go back to the faq for some more help.

It is also quite possible that I suck at the game.

Tower Knight fucked my shit up, too. My strategy was to run around and kill all the archers first and then try to get behind him. If I got low on health, I ran like a bitch to the top and then stood inside where his crazy big magic attack can't hit you. When I took him down, my balls swelled up. A good place to grind souls early is the Black Phantoms near the entrance of 1-1 and if you're really feeling brave, take on the Red Knight up near the king's tomb. It's hard as fuck, though, yeah! And listen to GT Chris. Ranged helps A LOT!

The game actually has a built in alternative to using faqs, at least for bosses. I would defeat each boss 2-3 times in other players' games before actually attempting the boss in my own. As well as learning strategies from other players, I would get some experience myself along with some much needed souls for buffing my stats. If you don't want to navigate through the whole level, just leave your soul sign outside the boss chamber.
